Bioethics Program Shortens Introductory Course to Better Serve Students

New Schedule
Requires Fewer Days Off From Work

The Bioethics Program is reducing the length of its on-site introductory course, Proseminar in Health and Human Values, to better accommodate working professionals who wish to complete the Master’s degree. The Proseminar provides an introduction to current topics in clinical ethics, research ethics and bioethics, and is taught at Union Graduate College and Mount Sinai School of Medicine as part of the Master’s of Science in Bioethics.

Formerly a two-week program, this intensive course now will be conducted over eight days, from Saturday afternoon to the following Sunday morning. The change is in response to feedback from students and alumni who found it difficult to take two consecutive weeks off of work.

“We are maintaining the high quality and standards of the Proseminar - it will simply require less time away from work and family,” said Prof. Robert Baker, Program Director. “In today’s challenging economic climate, asking an employer for two weeks off is tough. One week away is easier”.

Students typically begin the hybrid on-site/on-line program with the summer Proseminar. They return to New York two more times during a three year period for additional week-long courses that provide valuable practical skills training and hands-on experiences that cannot be taught on-line. Taught by international experts, the Program gives students a global perspective on the evolving field of bioethics, while allowing them to maintain full-time jobs.
