On May 11th, the Bioethics Program hosted the first of many
"Bioethics Breakfasts" at the Graduate Center. For this inaugural
event, Prof. Baker invited his colleague and friend Dr. Noam Zohar to discuss his work on health care resource
allocation. Dr. Zohar is Associate Professor of
Jewish Philosophy and Chair (General Philosophy) at Bar-Ilan
University, where he also directs the Graduate Program in Bioethics. Dr. Zohar is also a member of the Israeli Ministry of Healths National Advisory Committee, which meets yearly to
assess new drugs and medical technologies and to make recommendations as to
whether these drugs and techniques should be provided to all Israeli citizens
as part of its universal health care package. Speaking to a group of twenty faculty, students, alumni and guests, Dr. Zohar described the ethical and moral issues that Committee
faces when making such health policy recommendations. Starting in the 2010-11
academic year, the Bioethics Program plans to host these Breakfasts
regularly. Everyone is invited to attend. In the future, we hope to webcast the
lectures so that out-of-town students and alumni will be able to participate.
