Alumni George F. Davis, MD, MS-Bioethics, has Essay Published in The Journal of Clinical Ethics.
In the Fall,
2009 issue of The Journal of Clinical Ethics, Bioethics Program graduate,
George F. Davis, MD, MSB, argues for physicians to consider Dying as a
diagnosis to guide treatment in patients with complicated, far advanced
disease. These patients and their families are often subjected to conflicting
reports and treatment strategies by various specialists involved. They cling to
hope of improvement with each intervention and fail to plan for the death is
unavoidable. Dr. Davis argues that a Dying Diagnosis can unify the treatment
plan and allow the patient and family to realistically plan while also hoping
for more time.
Dr. Davis is
a physician at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, NY.
