Public Health Expert Also Chairs EPA
Board
Schenectady, NY -- Sean Philpott, Ph.D., MSB, has
joined the faculty of Union Graduate Colleges Center for Bioethics and
Clinical Leadership. Recently, he was also appointed Chair of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Human Studies Review Board. Founded
in 2006, the board reviews the scientific and ethical aspects of research that
are submitted to the EPA for regulatory purposes. Dr. Philpott was a founding
member.
A public health expert, Philpott has conducted extensive HIV prevention and
transmission research in Africa and Asia. He previously served as the Science
and Ethics officer for the Global Campaign for Microbicides, based at
PATH, an international nonprofit organization that works to improve the health
of people around the world. In that capacity, he worked with organizations like
UNAIDS and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
to address key issues in the design and conduct of HIV prevention trials,
including access to treatment for trial participants.
At Union Graduate College, Philpott is developing a Research Ethics Track
that focuses on ethical and policy issues in laboratory and clinical research.
He also helps to coordinate the Center's Advanced Certificate Program in
Research Ethics, a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded program to
train Central and Eastern European doctors, scientists, lawyers, and
politicians to become research ethicists and advocates for human subject
protections in former Eastern Bloc countries.
Dr. Philpott joins Union Graduate Colleges Center for Bioethics at a time of
rapid growth. The hybrid on-line/on-site program has doubled in size in just
three years.
Dr.
Philpott brings a unique, highly regarded combination of scholarly research and
real-world application in bioethics, said Dr. Robert Baker, Director of the
Center for Bioethics and Clinical Leadership. From HIV research to his current
role with the EPA, Sean draws on first-hand experience to teach our students
how the emerging field of bioethics is shaping public policy and biomedical
research.
A triple threat, Dr. Philpott holds degrees in microbiology, anthropology, and
bioethics. He received his Masters of Science in Bioethics from Union Graduate College, following a Ph.D. in Public Health Microbiology from the University of California at Berkeley and postdoctoral training in infectious diseases with the
New York State Department of Health.
