Taking Courses
on Joule
The Bioethics Program has chosen to offer its courses through a Moodlerooms, Inc., product called Joule®.
A typical on-line course will consist of lectures, readings, class discussions - conducted through online forums a feature that allows students from different time zones to engage in a group discussion of selected topics. The Joule assignments feature permits students to electronically upload assignments into the professor’s computer. Joule also offers the ability to present on-line examinations and quizzes, and to give students instant feedback on their answers. Students may track their grades through their grade book. Anything available on the Web can serve as supplemental reading materials, and the full range of video media can be delivered through Joule. The Bioethics Program also uses Joule to create a “Bioethics Commons” that alumni and students use to chat with each other about current events, and to share information and news about everything from new jobs to family photos.
As one of the oldest on-line graduate bioethics programs, The Bioethics Program has had a wealth of experience teaching bioethics to a range of students around the globe. Some are computer neophytes; others are sophisticates. Our students have used computer equipment of different vintages, made by an amazing array of manufacturers, and have taking courses using not only browsers Apple (Safari) and Windows (Internet Explorer) browsers but a host of others. From the most naïve to the most sophisticated, we found that we have been able to meet their needs using the online learning management system.
